DRESSING THE TOWN

Throughout the year Reigate Business Guild dress the town in a number of ways. Starting in April we celebrate St George’s Day by raising the St George’s Cross flags throughout the town and on the Old Town Hall on April 23rd. St George is the patron saint of England and St George’s Day is recognised as England’s national day on the anniversary of his death in 303AD. For more background information on St George’s Day take a look at the English Heritage website or CLICK HERE.

In the Summer we support Reigate Summer Festival by raising the flags in town and in 2026 we are also sponsoring the cross street banners which will be in situ from the beginning of June until the end of Festival which takes place over the weekend of 19-21st June.

In November we commemorate Remembrance Day (Armistice Day) on 11th November and Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November) by raising flags in the town centre and on top of the Old Town Hall. Remembrance Day is held in the United Kingdom as a day to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the World Wars and all worldwide conflicts since. Reigate Business Guild are also invited to attend the annual Remembrance Sunday Service at Shaws Corner, where we lay a wreath on behalf of Guild members. On Thursday 8th May 2025 we also raised special flags to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day.

In the past we have also dressed the town to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee and coronation of King Charles III. We also marked the death of Her Majesty the Queen by raising the Union Flags on the Old Town Hall to half-mast. The Union Flags were not raised on other buildings in the town centre as flags on poles that are more than 45⁰ from the vertical cannot be flown at half-mast. Following the coronavirus lockdowns we gave thanks to the NHS and Keyworkers for their support by raising flags in their honour throughout the town.

We are extremely grateful to RBG Volunteers who help maintain and raise the flags throughout the year. Funds raised by Reigate Business Guild pay for the flags and help us dress the town.
